In July of 2015, my husband and I had what we now refer to as our 'life-crash'.
Our life together wasn't working. So we quit our jobs, gave away 75% of our possessions, and moved from a huge four-bedroom suburban house to a tiny, wonky apartment in the inner city.
He had anxiety, I had depression, and our marriage was on a knife-edge.
We sat there in our tiny, crazy old apartment, listening to the mushrooms grow on the bathroom wall, and looked at each other like, "now what?"
Fast-forward one year, to July of 2016.
He had started writing for fun again, and trained as a barista, and taken up running (to everybody's complete surprise). He was working, and making friends, and had happy eyes.
I had gotten up off the couch and got my butt into gym classes, and dance classes, and any kind of thing that moved my body. I had started a blog and assembled a new squad and had a nice, safe part-time office job.
We'd started enjoying ourselves and each other again. But we knew that this still wasn't the life we wanted.
My husband is a born wordsmith, a super-concerned lover of people and their problems, a big vision-haver and really good at puns. He wasn't made for working behind a coffee machine for his whole life.
And anybody who's met me for like, five minutes could tell that I'm way too ambitious, over-productive, crazy creative and irritatingly unconventional to put up with answering phones in an office long-term.
So we took ourselves on a one-day DIY retreat. We pre-prepped our food, turned off our phones and sat down together for one whole day, to figure out our dream life and how we could create it.
I made us a workbook for the day, because that's the kind of person I am.
When I told people about our day, a lot of them asked me for the workbook. So I developed it into a full-blown, 25-page guidebook that you can use to work through your own one-day retreat.
I believe that everybody has something to offer the world that's uniquely theirs. I believe that you have the capacity, and the resources, and the smarts to create a life that's based on doing what you do best, on terms that will help you thrive. So I wrote this workbook to help you figure that out.
